BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Adonis Volanakis (b. 1976, Athens) studied 2D/3D/4D arts: BA (Hons) / University of Arts London, Wimbledon School of Art/ - awarded the Vice-Chancellor Prize/ First Prize of the school- ; MA / Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design/ with exchange in Aalto University in Helsinki – awarded scholarships: AHRC Postgraduate Award/Arts & Humanities Research Council/ UK, Vardinoyianneio Foundation/ GR and B&E Goulandris Foundation/ GR- ; Pre Doctoral Research DALI/ Central Saint Martins - awarded scholarship by Propondis Foundation/ GR-, First Year of Art Therapy/ Art & Psychotherapy Center Athens ; PhD gained with Excellent unanimously/ National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - awarded scholarship by Alexander S. Onassis Foundation- ; as a Visiting Artist/ Scholar at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, USA – awarded scholarship by Fulbright Foundation-.
His visual practice is a collaborative amalgam of fine and performing arts, human relationships and aesthetics, poetry and politics. In 2006 he founded and facilitates blind date, a togethering cross-disciplinary platform, bridging artists and communities. Adonis creates installations, exhibitions and performances: USA (Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery, Dixon’s Place, Kimmel Galleries, etc.), in UK (Royal Opera House-Covent Garden, National Theatre, etc.), in Switzerland (Archeological Museum/ Basel, Kaskadenkondensator), ; in Georgia (History Museum of Tbilisi, State Silk Museum); in Greece (DOCUMENTA 14, Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, State Museum of Contemporary Art, European Cultural Centre of Delphi, Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, National Theatre, Greek National Opera, Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Benaki Museum, Onassis Cultural Centre, Cacoyannis Foundation, Athens Biennial) and in France, Canada, Finland etc. Adonis has curated and facilitated community based public art projects in Patras, Ithaca, Heraklion, Piraeus and Czech Republic.
Creating safe spaces for creativity is part of Adonis’ artistic practice so he has being teaching and/or researching nonstop since 2005 in Greece (University of Peloponnese, University of Patras, Athens Conservatoire), in France (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs /Paris) and in USA (Tisch School of the Arts/ New York University). Currently Adonis is an Assistant Professor at Fine Arts Department / Cyprus University of Technology since September 2021.
